The cost of orthodontic treatment can be considerable – especially when it comes to braces for adults. Many patients wonder whether their health insurance will cover the costs. In Austria, however, the situation is clear: in most cases, braces are private treatment and you have to pay for them yourself.

In Austria, health insurance funds only cover the cost of braces in very rare cases. The reason: orthodontic treatment is often regarded as an aesthetic procedure unless there is a medical need.
The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK), for example, only contributes to the costs if there is a malocclusion graded IOTN 4 or 5 (IOTN: Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). This means that only severe malocclusions fall into the category of medical need. For milder misalignments, such as gaps between the teeth or crowding, the costs have to be paid entirely privately, even at an orthodontist's.
Even if there is a medical need, most health insurance funds in Austria only pay a subsidy towards the total cost of the braces. Most Austrians are insured with the ÖGK, Austria's statutory health insurance. Here, the subsidy for fixed orthodontic treatment is €724 per year of treatment – provided the treatment is medically necessary and certain criteria are met.
For most patients, this means that they receive no support at all from their health insurance for mild or moderate misalignments.
