It is well known that sugar has a bad effect on teeth: sugar is broken down into acids by caries bacteria. These attack the tooth enamel and tooth decay develops.
You should also be careful with fruit, smoothies, or lemonade, as they contain a lot of acids. These soften the enamel and minerals are released.
Our tip: If you eat fruit, also eat calcium-rich foods such as yoghurt and combine them.
Saliva also helps: saliva binds the acid and rinses the mouth. Foods like carrots need to be chewed longer, which stimulates salivation.
Foods containing fluoride and calcium harden tooth enamel and stimulate the flow of saliva: Fluoride hardens tooth enamel. Foods that contain fluoride include fish, walnuts, black tea, and fluoridated table alt. There is also toothpaste containing fluoride.
Dairy products contain a lot of calcium and strengthen teeth. Mild and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt, but also vegetables such as kale, broccoli, leeks, and spinach are particularly rich in calcium.
